Description

Space and Style: RIDGIDRAIN Highway and Rail Drainage Recycled HDPE Drainage Pipe

Ridgidrain is a high-strength twin-wall drainage pipe manufactured from up to 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), designed for non-pressurised surface water and sub-surface drainage in highways, railways, commercial developments, residential estates, airports and agricultural projects. Its structured twin-wall design provides superior load-bearing capability while being up to 94% lighter than equivalent concrete pipe – dramatically reducing transport costs, crane requirements and installation time on Kenyan construction sites where plant access and logistics are often constrained.
The smooth inner bore delivers excellent hydraulic performance, while the corrugated outer wall provides the ring stiffness needed to resist high traffic loads. Supplied in 6 m lengths, the system significantly reduces the number of joints compared to traditional clay or concrete drainage, lowering the risk of leakage and long-term maintenance costs. Ridgidrain is distributed in Kenya by Space and Style Ltd through its FlowPlumb division, and is suited to stormwater management, flood prevention, attenuation, infiltration and general site drainage across Kenya’s rapidly expanding urban and infrastructure projects.

Key Technical Information

  • Material: up to 100% recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE), structured twin-wall construction
  • Wall profile: corrugated black outer wall for strength; smooth inner wall (blue as standard) for hydraulic efficiency
  • Pipe diameter range: 100 mm to 600 mm (standard Ridgidrain); 750 mm to 900 mm available in Ridgidrain extended range; 750 mm to 3,000 mm in Ridgistorm XL for large-diameter flood storage
  • Standard pipe lengths: 6 m (100–600 mm sizes); 3 m (750–900 mm sizes); 1.25–12 m (Ridgistorm XL)
  • Ring stiffness: SN6 as standard (SN4 available for 750–900 mm where application permits)
  • Design life: in excess of 50 years (Ridgistorm XL: lifetime expectancy of at least 100 years)
  • Weight advantage: up to 94% lighter than concrete, up to 30% quicker to install than conventional drainage materials.
  • Perforations: available unperforated, half-perforated and fully perforated for infiltration and attenuation applications
  • Jointing: integral sockets for fast alignment; easily cut to size on site with standard tools
  • Chemical resistance: high resistance to most common chemicals; suitable for stormwater applications
  • Approvals: BBA certified, BBA HAPAS approved (first twinwall system to achieve this in the UK), Network Rail PADS approved
  • Applications: highways, airports, residential, commercial, rail, industrial, agricultural, education, flood alleviation, wastewater and sewer, component chambers and manholes

Efficiency Features

  1. Material Efficiency: Up to 100% recycled content: manufactured from up to 100% recycled high-strength HDPE, diverting post-industrial and post-consumer plastic from landfill and giving it a structural second life with a service lifespan exceeding 50 years.
  2. Reduced CO₂ in production, transportation and on-site handling: the 94% weight reduction compared to concrete means significantly fewer delivery trips to site, lower fuel consumption per load, and reduced crane and plant emissions during installation.
  3. Stormwater management and flood prevention: perforated variants allow rainwater to infiltrate directly into the ground, supporting groundwater recharge and reducing peak run-off volumes, critical for Kenyan urban areas facing increasing flood risk from impervious surface expansion
  4. Reduced embodied energy versus concrete and clay: HDPE pipe production requires less energy than concrete manufacturing, and the recycled feedstock further reduces the virgin material demand and associated extraction impacts
  5. Long-term durability reduces replacement cycles: a design life exceeding 50 years (100+ years for Ridgistorm XL) means fewer replacement interventions, less construction waste over the building lifecycle, and lower lifetime carbon
  6. Recyclable at end of life: the polyethylene material can be recycled again at the end of its service life, supporting circular economy principles
  7. Reduced site disruption: faster installation (up to 30% quicker) means shorter construction windows, less machinery time on site, and lower noise and emissions impact on surrounding communities
  8. Lightweight handling improves site safety: reduces manual handling risks and the need for heavy lifting equipment, supporting safer working conditions on Kenyan construction sites
