Description

THE WEEE CENTRE

The WEEE Centre is one of Africa’s largest dedicated e-waste management facilities, providing certified collection, dismantling, data destruction, and recycling services for electrical and electronic equipment. Operating from Embakasi in Nairobi with eight collection centres across Kenya, the facility processes end-of-life electronics to recover valuable raw materials — copper, aluminium, precious metals, and plastics — while ensuring hazardous components (lead, mercury, cadmium) are safely handled and diverted from landfill. For construction and property management companies, the WEEE Centre offers a compliant disposal route for building management system electronics, HVAC controls, lighting systems, IT infrastructure, and other e-waste generated during fit-out, renovation, and demolition.

Technical specifications

  • Core services: e-waste collection (on-demand and scheduled), secure data destruction (shredding and wiping), IT asset disposal (ITAD) with chain of custody, electronics recycling, refurbishment and reuse, and asset recovery
  • Processed over 10,000 tonnes of e-waste since 2012
  • Prevented an estimated 14,400 tonnes of CO2 emissions through its disposal services
  • Eight collection centres across Kenya, with a training centre in Kakuma and Kalobeyei (Turkana County)
  • ISO 9001:2015 certified (Quality Management)
  • ISO 14001:2015 certified (Environmental Management)
  • NAID AAA certified (National Association for Information Destruction — secure data destruction)
  • R2 certified (Responsible Recycling — electronics recycling standard)
  • Methods adopted in Uganda, Tanzania, and Rwanda

Sustainability features

  • Recovers valuable materials from e-waste, returning copper, aluminium, precious metals, and plastics to the manufacturing supply chain
  • Prevents hazardous substances (lead, mercury, cadmium, brominated flame retardants) from entering landfill and contaminating soil and groundwater
  • NAID AAA and R2 certifications provide internationally recognised proof of responsible recycling and data destruction practices
  • CO2 prevention through proper disposal (14,400+ tonnes diverted)
  • Supports Kenya’s compliance with the Bamako Convention on hazardous waste and e-waste regulations
  • Training programmes for youth and women in digital literacy, ICT repair, and solar equipment maintenance contribute to green skills development
