KITENGELA Glass: Funky Fencing screen ‘Balles de Jongleurs’
The Funky Fencing screen ‘Balles de Jongleurs’ is a handcrafted decorative glass panel made entirely from 100% recycled scrap glass, sourced from discarded window panes and bottles collected from Kenya’s building industry. Produced at Kitengela Hot Glass’s studio, the screen serves as an architectural feature for garden gates, balustrades, privacy screening, wall art and interior partitions in both residential and commercial settings. Each panel is unique, created using Kitengela’s homegrown glassmaking technique developed over more than 35 years of working with locally sourced waste glass. Every panel is bespoke, made to fit any space, inside or outside, home or office, combines waste diversion with a distinctive design element that no factory-produced product can replicate.

Efficiency Feature
- Material Efficiency:100% recycled content: every panel is made from post-consumer scrap glass — no virgin raw materials are used
- Waste diversion at scale: Kitengela Hot Glass melts approximately 150 kg of scrap glass per day and has converted over 2,000 tonnes (2,000,000 kg) of waste window and bottle glass into products over the studio’s lifetime
- CO₂ reduction: the studio estimates over 330 tonnes of CO₂ saved to date, based on the principle that one tonne of CO₂ is avoided for every six tonnes of recycled glass used in place of virgin production
- Waste-to-energy fuel cycle: the glass melting and annealing process is fuelled by approximately 200 litres of used engine oil per day, diverting a second waste stream from the environment
- Zero-waste operating ethos: packaging uses reclaimed newspaper and second-hand boxes; finished glass objects that do not meet standards are repurposed into new products (a vase may become a candle shield or lamp base)
